As nurses across the country battle against staffing shortages, burnout, and an all-time high of demands and strains on the overall healthcare system, little time is left for sifting through new rules and requirements for license renewal!

Licenses are set to expire during a chaotic, 2024 fall season for Alabama nurses, and a lapse in licensure not only means a big headache dealing with the Alabama Board of Nursing, but also the inability to continue working.

That’s why our Nursing CE Central team has a full breakdown of top questions, deadlines, requirements, and consequences of missing the December 31st 2024 renewal deadline for the 2024Alabama nursing license renewal period.

According to the Alabama Board of Nursing, any nurse who does not renew their license before 4:30pm on December 31, 2024 will have their license lapse. Nurses will “no longer be legally authorized to practice with a lapsed nursing license.”

1. How can I renew my license this year?

Alabama  nurses can renew their  license online by visiting the Alabama Board of Nursing online portal (https://abn.alabama.gov/msl/renewal/renewallogin.aspx) using their license number and last four digits of their social security number, and CE Record.

2. Is the Alabama BON waiving any renewal requirements this year due to COVID?

According to the Alabama Board of Nursing (BON), no. Regular requirements for the 2024 renewal period are currently in place, such as the December 31, 2024 renewal deadline, continuing education completion, and state fees.

3. What are the 2024CE requirements for renewal?

Most nurses must meet Alabama’s Continuing Education Competency requirements in order to renew their license. The Alabama Board of Nursing requires 24 Contact Hours from a Board-approved or Board-recognized continuing education provider such as Nursing CE Central. Four of those contact hours must be on The Nurse Practice Act, which is a one time requrement.

Nurses who are renewing their license for the first time must complete The Nurse Practice act, but are excempt from taking any other CE.

4. What do I need to have ready when starting my renewal online with the Alabama BON?

Nurses will need a valid method of payment (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express), documentation of at least twenty-four (24) contact hours of continuing education uploaded to your CE Record to complete their renewal through the Alabama nurse licensing platform. Continuing education requirements must be fulfilled by 4:30 pm on Sunday December 31st 2024.

5. I have to renew my license for the first time. Where can I take the mandatory four-hour course?

Each new licensee is required to complete the four-hour mandatory class prior to his or her first renewal.

Follow the outlined steps:

  1. Go to the Alabama Board of Nursing web site, www.abn.alabama.gov.
  2. After entering the site, select the Alabama Nursing Resource Center, then select the Nursing CE tab.
  3. Before selecting to view a class:
    • Test your system to determine readiness to view online courses.
    • Review Frequently Asked Questions, including system requirements.
  4. Choose the mandatory class by selecting the (+) next to it. You will be required to log in at this point. Log in requires your Alabama nursing license number and the last four digits of your social security number as your pin number.
  5. Select and view.
  6. If you are required to complete the class, you must view each segment of the class to earn the four (4.0) contact hours of continuing education.

6. What happens if I don’t renew my license before the December 31st deadline?

According to the Alabama Board of Nursing, any nurse who does not renew their license before 4:30pm on December 31st 2024 will have their license lapse. Nurses will “no longer be legally authorized to practice with a lapsed nursing license.”

7. Can I still work/practice if I miss my renewal deadline?

No.  Nurses are NOT legally authorized to work in Alabama with a lapsed nursing license.

8. How can I get my license active again?

All nurses who miss their renewal deadline will need to file for a license reinstatement with the Alabama Board of Nursing. More information on the reinstatement process can be found online at the Board’s reinstatement information page (https://www.abn.alabama.gov/faq/how-many-contact-hours-of-continuing-education-are-required-for-reinstatement-of-a-lapsed-license/).

9. How long must I keep documentation proving I completed my 2024 CEU requirements for renewal?

The Alabama Board of Nursing requires that all licensees keep proof of continuing education completion for each renewal period, for a minimum of four years. This documentation is needed in case a nurse is selected for an audit by the Alabama BON within that time frame.

*Nursing CE Central stores lifetime copies of all CEU certificates of completion for active members.
