FAQ

Does Illinois accept continuing education from Nursing CE central?

Yes, the Illinois Board of Nursing accepts continuing education from Nursing CE Central for purposes of license renewal.

Is the mandatory Illinois Sexual Harassment Prevention course included?

Yes! This required course is included in your membership. Once enrolled you will have access to all the courses you need for license renewal.

My employer provides a sexual harassment prevention training course. Does this satisfy the mandatory sexual harassment training requirement?

Maybe. In order for your employer’s CE course to satisfy the requirement it must:

1.) Be an approved Nursing CE provider

2.) Include all mandatory components of the course, as prescribed by the IDFPR (what is sexual harassment, how to respond to sexual harassment, reporting sexual harassment, and Whistleblower protections.)

3.) Provide a certificate for the course, which meets IDFPR standards.

If you are unsure, it is wise to contact your hospital educator to verify that the course meets the Nursing CE renewal requirements set forth in Section 1130.400  Sexual Harassment Prevention Training.

If you are unable to verify, we suggest taking a sexual harassment prevention course through an approved provider whose course is accepted by the Illinois Board of Nursing.

What are the continuing education requirements for RNs in Illinois?

LPNs and RNs are required to complete 20 contact hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.

    • 1 of the 20 contact hours must be on Sexual Harassment
    • 1 of  the 20 contact hours must be on Implicit Bias

    • 20 of the 80 contact hours must be on pharmacotherapeutics
      • 10 of the 20 pharmacotherapeutic contact hours must be on Opioid Prescribing or Substance Abuse
    • 3 of the 80 contact hours must be on Safe Opioid Prescribing Practices if wishing to renew Controlled Substances Registration

Are tests required?

No. The Illinois Board of Nurisng does not require that tests be taken in order to issue certificates. We do not feel that tests are an efficient use of nurses’ time. Therefore, we do not require tests. You simply need to read the material and certify you have learned the material with one click.

How do I access my certificates once a course is completed?

Your certificate will be instantly emailed to you once you complete a course. Additionally, it is available online for you to access at any time. We keep a record of your certificates for five years.

Are the courses timed?

No. Users may complete the courses at their own pace. Nursing CE Central does not monitor your time spent in courses.

What is your refund policy?

Nursing CE Central is proud to offer a 100% money back guarantee. If you have not earned any certificates we will refund your purchase without question.

How do I complete a course?

Once you enroll you will have access to all courses. To complete a course you read and learn the course materials, then testify that you have done so by clicking a button. Once this is complete your certificate will be issued.

Illinois BON FAQ

How can I renew my license? Can I mail in a paper renewal application?

Illinois nurses must renew their license online through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation’s Portal (https://online-dfpr.micropact.com/) once the portal opens on or before July 1, 2022. The Department typically opens the renewal portal 60-90 days before the renewal deadline

Is the Illinois Board of Nursing waiving any renewal requirements this year due to COVID?

Yes! According to a March 2022 announcement from the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, the deadline for renewal for professional nurses and advanced practice registered nurses has been moved from May 31, 2022, to August 31, 2022. Renewal fees have also been reduced to $0, all in part to, “further strengthen the healthcare workforce during the State’s continued battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.”

What are the continuing education requirements for the 2023 renewal period?

All nurses must complete 20 hours of approved continuing education per each two-year license renewal cycle. While there are several ways to obtain these credit hours, most nurses take traditional continuing education courses.

Of these 20 hours, one hour must fulfill the Nurse Practice Act’s Sexual Harassment training requirement, one hour of Implicit Bias training, as well as one hour on Alzheimer’s Disease.

(Nursing CE Central’s 2023 Illinois Renewal Bundle includes both of these required courses.)

What happens if I don't renew my license before the August 31, 2023, deadline?

All nurses who miss the August 31st renewal deadline will need to file for a license reinstatement if they wish to continue practicing in the state of Illinois. This process comes with additional fees, and also requires nurses to submit proof of completed continuing education.

To reinstate a lapsed license, nurses must fill out a Reinstatement Application, found under the ‘RN & LPN Applications’ tab at https://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/068/068013000A00300R.html. Fees must be paid by check or money order, and nurses must include proof of completed continuing education in order for their request to be processed.

How can I check that my renewal application is complete?

You can verify your license at https://online-dfpr.micropact.com/. Due to heavy
volume, the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation says it may take 2-4 business days for a license to post in their systems and for a license status to update.

Do I have to keep documentation proving I completed my 2023 continuing education requirements for renewal?

Yes! While most nurses who renew their license on or before the August 31, 2023, deadline will not need to submit proof of their completed continuing education, those who miss the deadline will need to submit copies during the license reinstatement process.
Furthermore, each nurse is responsible for keeping individual records of continuing education completion, should the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation request it. Nursing CE Central suggests keeping these records for a minimum of three renewal cycles, or six years, should a nurse be selected for an audit.

Besides the new renewal deadline of August 31, 2023, and the $0 renewal fee, are any other requirement being waved?

No. According to the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, all other renewal requirements are still in place. This includes continuing education requirements and consequences of missing the new August 31st, 2023 renewal deadline.
