The Louisiana State Board of Nursing requires 30 Contact Hours of Continuing Education for RNs.

5. How do I check that my renewal application is complete?

You should receive a message in the Inbox of the message center of your online Nurse Portal Account after you have successfully submitted the application. The LSBN licensure verification and the Nursys.com website will reflect updated licensure status within 24-48 hours of application submission.

6. What is the main reason Louisiana RNs have an unsuccessful CE/nursing practice audit? 

According to the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, failure to complete and maintain proof of CEs that have been accredited by the ANCC or approved by a state board of nursing is the most common reason RNs have not successfully completed the audit when they are renewing based upon the requirement for CE contact hours.

7. How can I save money on state-imposed renewal fees?

While the final deadline for renewal is January 31, 2024, licensees who file after December 31, 2023 will incur an additional $50 late fee in addition to the standard renewal fee. You can save money by completing your CEUs and license renewal prior to December 31, 2023.

8. When is the last day to renew my license with the state of Louisiana, WITHOUT paying ‘late processing’ fees?

You have until the end of December 31, 2023, to renew your license with the state of Louisiana without incurring an additional $50 late fee.

9. Do I need to submit proof of completion of my CEUs for license renewal?

Nurses are not required to submit documentation at the time of renewal, however, all CEUs must be complete by the renewal deadline of January 31, 2024. The Louisiana State Board of Nursing does require that you maintain a copy of all CEU documentation for a minimum of five years, in case of an audit.

10. When is the last day to renew my license with the state of Louisiana, before my license will lapse?

You have until January 31, 2024, to renew your license with the state of Louisiana before a license reinstatement is required.

11. I missed the 2024renewal deadline. How can I get my license active again?

If you missed the January 31, 2024, license renewal deadline, your license is now inactive, and you are not allowed to practice in the state of Louisiana until you submit a license reinstatement application. Licensure applications must be completed online through Louisiana’s Nurse Portal at: https://lsbn.boardsofnursing.org/lsbn. You will be required to submit proof of completed CEUs when applying for reinstatement.

12. What happens if I don’t renew my license before the January 31, 2024 deadline?

The Louisiana State Board of Nursing places all nurses with expired licenses on an expired status. Nurses with an expired status will not be allowed to practice until their license is reinstated. 

13. Do I need to submit proof of completion of my continuing education requirements for a license reinstatement?

Yes. You will be required to upload your completed continuing education documents when applying for reinstatement.
